John P. Furniss thanks Judge Haden for sending $100. He explains that room and board must be paid in advance and he was concerned he would not have the money in time. He discusses his concerns about being able to help his mother financially. He mentions that the state convention has convened in New Orleans and that Cousin John Perkins was elected, among others. He adds, "'Ole Abe' was burnt in effigy a few nights ago. The spectacle was quite ludicrous."
