Discusses the sum Joseph Jones and [Benjamin?] Bartlett received for the loss of their barns (the barns were burnt down by the settlers). Also mentions how he had hoped to see Ulmer before his departure from Boston, Massachusetts. A portion of the bottom right corner of the letter is missing causing minor text loss and the loss of Knox's signature.

Hopes Thomas can help him peaceably resolve hostilities and disagreements with settlers on and near the Waldo patent. Settlers living on or near his lands have become upset over issues of land ownership, and worries Knox might encroach on their lands, and recently become violent. Knox assures Thomas this is due to misunderstandings, and that he has the settlers best interests in mind. Hopes that Thomas can persuade them of this fact. Written in Russell's hand, but is signed by both Russell and James Sullivan. References a letter they wrote to Knox on 9 December 1792. That letter received no answer, so they are repeating its contents in this letter. They are writing in their capacity as committee members appointed by the directors of the Middlesex Canal Company. The directors are happy that Knox is friendly to their plan. They would also like a recommendation of a man "who is skilled in the business of Canalling, who can point us to the place where, under all Circumstances, the Canal ought to be cut." Knox tell Governor Strong that the Attorney General has sent Strong "certain affadavits, exhibiting the outlines of an attempt made by unknown persons within the Waldo Patent, and County of Hancock to assassinate certain surveyors, who were in lawful pursuit of their business." Knox insists he always tried to peacefully resolve any conflicts between himself and settlers. Violence is not necessary. Knox goes on to explain his case and say that "the people generally within the Waldo Patent have an honor and keen [sense] of resentment against the recent act."

Knox sends to Governor Strong three affidavits of the surveyors "who were fired upon by assassins on the 13th ultimo." Knox speaks of the "most audacious and blood thirsty villains that ever disgraced the surface of New England." Knox thinks the perpetrators reside in Plymouth county. He wishes that the law come down as hard as possible on them. But strong government agents must be the ones investigating this, because lesser ones would not be as effectual.

A journal taken while surveying the Waldo patent, along with Captain Jonathan Hill, Surveyor, for Henry Knox. Written in various locations throughout Maine. Contains "A General description of the land - the Situation - the Various Soils, Timber Rivers Ponds and Principal Stream upon the Patent." Notes that they are being prevented from surveying the shore near Ducktrap by Samuel Ely and his disciples, under the threat of severe punishment. Last entry dated 12 August 1793.

Agreement between Knox and "the twenty associates" represented by Charles Barrett regarding lands in the Waldo patent. Establishes the boundaries of the lands owned by the associates, and lists other rules reragding this property. The twenty associates were the group that initially owned the Waldo patent, with Samuel Waldo being a member. Also signed by Charless Barrett, David Cobb, John Wills and Thomas Cobb.

Title: Articles of agreement between H Knox and J. Hills

Indenture agreement between John Hills and Henry Knox for a survey between the Connecticut River and the Charles River. They agree that all the results shall be sent to Knox and no one else under the penalty of "one thousand dollars." The agreement also states that Knox has sent Hills "the sum of three hundred Dollars which is for the purpose of defraying the necessary expences of chain men and other necessary assistance in prosecution the said survey."
