Reports that the storm almost grounded the men in rebel country, but the anchors grounded the boat about 200 hundred yards from the shore. Reports that the regiment is expected to leave for the Army the following Monday, but he is highly doubtful that it will actually happen. Reports that fifteen men from his company were wounded or killed at the battle of Chaffin's Farm. Names and describes some of the men wounded and lost in the battle, including Corporal Housewearst, who was considered the pride of the company. Writes that General Butler has sent Major Winn to Harrisburg for more recruits to "fill up" the regiment.

Reports that Butler's canal is finished; torpedoes and mines will be laid in the canal. Discusses his Thanksgiving meal, which consisted of turkey, chicken, walnuts, and cranberries. Reports that the regiment has received one hundred recruits of which twenty have gone to Painter's company. Writes that he is no longer in the mail department because he received orders to report to his company for duty. Reports that Dr. Strawbridge, the medical director of the 18th Army Corps, was captured by rebels. Signs the letter as "Sgt. Heber Painter."

Docket notes that the original document dates to May 20, 1780.

Also discusses an order for money. Trescott resigned his commission later that year and went on to found Trescott, Maine. Damaged where the seal has been removed causing minor text loss.

Broadside says that the 4,240 troops apportioned on Massachusetts was not a sufficient quota to fill out the Massachusetts Line by nearly 1,000 men. Because of casualties and this shortage, the state needs to raise another 1,500 men for three years or the duration of the war. The schedule is broken down by county and further into the quota for each town. Totals provided for each county. Essex County is asked to provide the most with 232 recruits and Dukes County the least with 10 recruits. Resolves at the end of the document provides the details for the enlistments. Says he "made prospects this day for the purchase of the other million, but I think they will not sell, or will ask much higher than ten Cents." Wants to know the highest price he'll go. Tells him General David Cobb will not accept the "marshallcy" because "it would not give him salt for his family." Says that the office offered to General David Brooks is not lucrative enough to support a family.
