Washington responds to French settlers who had invested in the Scioto Company, which had obtained an option on 5 million acres in the Northwest Territory. The company sold the lands to French citizens fleeing the Revolution. Unfortunately the Scioto project began to collapse in 1790 and was defunct by 1792. When the fraud was uncovered, the settlers had already arrived at Alexandria, so they petitioned Washington for redress. Ultimately, land was found for the settlers in Gallipolis, Ohio. Eppes planned to sell his estate which Jefferson wanted to buy. Jefferson also mentions that indebtedness from his Washington residence has been nearly paid. Eppes rejected the proposal. At the end of the letter, Jefferson talks about the plans of Peter Carr (his nephew) for "enlarging the plan of his school" -- this is the Albemarle Academy which became the University of Virginia.

Lee, a Revolutionary War General from Virginia, was writing about an advertisement for land, which he appears to have an interest in, placed by Robert Howe. The other two letters are each a page. One is dated November 3, 1789 and the other December 9, 1789. Lee says he cannot make it to Howe's land sale, but that he will promote it in his area. The Tazewell lands were then placed in trust until Shurtluff came of age and appropriated them. Letter written by Lincoln on blue paper as Peters' lawyer. Docketed by recipient.

Partially printed land patent counter-signed by JamesTrimble as Deputy Secretary and witnessed by Pennsylvania Governor Thomas Mifflin. Lane obtained the land, called "Oatland" in Bald Eagle township, from Isaiah Davis. The document describes the specific boundaries of the tract, the sale of which was orchestrated through 1793 and 1794. A note signed by Matthew Irvin on the verso indicates that the patent was recorded in the state records on 20 April 1795. Large star shaped paper seal on top left corner.
