Hayes writes as Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers to Scammon, his superior, as commander of the 1st Brigade. States that he cannot get enough information about mill privileges and navigation on the New River. "At Richmond there is a fall of 8 to 12 feet - at other points there are falls which have always been Supposed to prevent all navigation, but 'impossible' is a hard word. I wouldn't speak it on my meagre information. I can say very difficult and dangerous."

Title continues: "on the 16th Nov[embe]r 1776, and Survey'd immediately after by order of his Lordship by Claude Joseph Sauthier. To which is added the Attack made to the North by the Hessians. Survey'd by Order of Lieut[enan]t Gen[era]l Knyphansen." Shows Fort Washington in northern Manhattan. Published "as the Act directs" in London on March 1, 1777, by permission of the Comissioners of Trade and Plantations. Hudson River and troop movements are hand colored. Kenneth Nebenzahl's "Battle Plans of the American Revolution" page 116 notes two later states.

Apologizes for lapse in correspondence due to recent traveling through Pennsylvania. Discusses Pennsylvania's hot sulphur springs and compares them to those in California. Thanks Mrs. Wright for her dinner invitation and will be sure to dine with the Wrights once he returns to Washington. Sutter was a pioneer of California who was ruined by the famous discovery of gold at his mill in 1848. Wright was a businessman, inventor, and U.S. representative from California.

Hopes that when Frémont returns and the third report is published, "you will not be prevented by the advertising system from giving it to the best artist." Year inferred.

With text "A Compendious Account of the British Colonies in North America" which contains a 1765 popluation chart of the British Colonies in North America, listing numbers of men (both African American and white) able to carry arms. Engraving with hand color on borders and on table (green/yellow). The map has some slight losses on the left side in the upper Mississippi River and also in West Florida; the "Account" has some slight text losses (noticeably: Nova Scotia).

John Trumbull (New Haven 1967), fig. 249, who refers to the original as "lost." Earliest known Grant letter.
