He requests a contribution of $20,000 from Massachusetts Governor Claflin to finance the preservation, for scientific purposes, of specimens discovered in the course of the surveys dredging, and fishing along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

One of Bachman's six lithographic views of the Confederate States in the series: "Panorama of the Seat of War." Shows the American Gulf Coast from Vermillion Bay, Louisiana, east to Santa Rosa Sound, Florida, and inland as far as Vicksburg, Mississippi, from a perspective facing north. All the major towns on the coast are located, as well as roads, railways, lighthouses, and sites of military interest. Provides detail on the defenses of New Orleans, and Pensacola, Florida, which appear to be under blockade.

One of Bachman's six lithographic views of the Confederate States in the series: "Panorama of the Seat of War." Shows the Atlantic coast from Albemarle Sound south to Savannah and inland to the Blue Ridge Mountains. All the major towns of the Carolinas are located, as well as roads, railways, and sites of military interest. Confederate forts along the coast and the Union blockade appear in detail. A flotilla is pictured attacking forts at the entrance to Hatteras Inlet. See GLC01856 for similar example.

Letters by missionaries from north of the Missouri River, 38 miles north of Santee Mission in South Dakota, describing teaching English, arithmetic, and bible to Yankton Sioux Indians. The collection was written to Rev. and Mrs. Alexander Shiras of the Bureau of Education in Washington, D.C., mostly by either Daniel Hemans or his wife, Nancy Hemans, with the greatest concentration of letters in the early 1870s and early 1880s. Both Nancy and Daniel were Santee Sioux Indians. Daniel joined the mission to the Yankton Sioux as an interpreter and a teacher, and eventually became a preacher.…

Colonel Scammon writes to Hayes, Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Ohio regiment asking when he can expect help from Confederate General Alfred Beckley on compiling maps. Stresses the importance of good maps and mentions that "General F." (Confederate General John B. Floyd) "believes in good maps." Year inferred from content and military ranks. Beckley (1892-1888) served the Confederacy as a brigadier general in the Virginia militia.
