Title: Legal brief in the case of Jones v. Walker

Legal brief in the suit of Jones, surviving partner of Farrell and Jones, of Great Britain, against Thomas Walker, Defendant, in debt on bond before the Federal Circuit Court, Richmond, Va. Entirely in the hand of Edmund Pendleton. Probably 1791. One of the greatest post-war problems in Virginia was the settlement of pre-war debts with English merchants, required by the Treaty of Peace, but virtually impossible in the inflation-ridden, cash poor economy of post-war Virginia. Title: Muster Roll of Captain Samuel Pages Company of Massachusetts Bay Regiment of Foot in the Service of the United States Commanded by Colonel Benjamin Tupper all engaged for the term of three years Taken for the month of March

Lists officers and soldiers under the command of Captain Samuel Page as a part of the 11th Massachusetts Regiment stationed at Valley Forge as of April 7, 1778. The 11th Massachusetts was a par of Patterson's Brigade. Four Sergeants, Three "Corprels", Twenty-Seven Privates, and One Drum & Fife Boy are listed. The document is signed by Captain Samuel Page and Lieutenant John Foster and dated to April 7, 1778. The document is docketed on verso. Notes are made in a separate column concerning the specific assignments of each soldier in the Company.

Title: A muster roll of Captain John W. Wendell's Company in the first Battalion New York Forces in the service of the United States commanded by Colonel Goose Van Schaick, for the months of January, February, and March 1779.

This document records the muster role for Captain John W. Wendell's Company in the First Battalion of New York. His company was under the greater command of Colonel Goose Van Schaick. It is signed by John Hansen, Lieutenant Colonel Cornelius Van Dycke, and Lieutenant N. Henry on verso, who attest to the validity of this roll. It was created at Fort Schuyler, New York. It includes notes, names, and terms of enlistment for privates, sergeants, and corporals. Includes some specific remarks regarding soldiers. The muster roll is for the months of January, February, and March of 1779.

Accompanied letter, GLC 1588. A print by Alexander Tardieu, designed and engraved after Houdon, with poem in French by J. Castera: "Pour saver sou pays du pouvoir arbitraire, / Washington combattit en guerrier valeureux...." Presumably the Houdon piece is the 1785 bust of Washington. It depicts Washington in profile with long hair and the words "G. Washington" on left inside a coin-shape.

John Patterson writes that he shall soon set out for Philadelphia, and notes that the people there seem to have become more moderate due to changes in the Assembly. In addition to this more moderate political sensibility, Patterson hopes that the export trade with England will be opened soon. He also expresses a desire for some kind of reconciliation with Great Britain, and thankfully believes that the peace of New York is secure for the moment. Docketed on verso.

Robert Cambridge writes that he has sold the last of his flour, and explains: "I thought it too dangerous to keep produce on hand at present it being most probable that a termination of our Commerce will take place about the middle of July and therefore I don't think it would be improper to send all the Flour you have by you down as soon as the Sloop returns." He also discusses the mounting tensions with Great Britain and notes, "The maneuvres of the Continental Congress are secret, but people imagine they are preparing or devising ways and means to carry on an opposition to parliament."

"The most turbulent Spirits amongst us do not expect the arrival of any Troops at present. Mr. Colden says it was only propogated to facilitate the introduction of the Connecticut Forces amongst us - We are now enjoying as much tranquility as ever we did and have no appearance of its being disturbed." Robert Cambridge urges his father to send him all his flour and wheat, as he believes that their right to export and trade it will be curtailed in the near future. He also mentions a rumor that regiments of 2000 to 3000 soldiers are being sent to New York to defend the province against British troops that are said to be moving in that direction as well.
