Next Tuesday [28 April 1863], a man from the 125th Ohio will be shot for "desertion, stealing and using threatening language" (see GLC05241.43). In Franklin, Tennessee, six more rebel families were ordered outside the Union lines. Also describes a military funeral for a cavalry lieutenant. Mentions a rumor that Generals [Braxton] Bragg and [Earl] Van Dorn will attack. McCandles is doing well.

Includes an accout of the incident from a letter written by the surgeon of the 85th Indiana regiment.

Sidney (or Sydney) Smith Lee was Robert E. Lee's older brother. A commander in the Confederate States Navy, S. Lee was chief of the Bureau of Orders and Detail at the time he signed this document.

Mentions that his colonel is under arrest for refusing to search the boat for escaped slaves. Notes he was put in charge of the contraband cook, who now wishes to go home with "Massa Magie."

Clerical copy of the charges against Shallenburger. He was charged with overstaying his leave of absence by about 10 days (as stated in his diary at GLC02263.02). Charges state he was given a 3 week leave from the USS "Forest Rose" on 1 March 1865. He did not return until 31 March. Endorsed as a true copy by the judge advocate.
