Signature is clipped. Creator indicated in docket. Discusses the arrival of the brig Columbia from Canton (present-day Guangzhou, China). On board the ship, there is property from [Samuel] Shaw "to be Improved in Building a Ship..." The ship is to be built under the direction of Mr. Peck. Awaits letters from Samuel Ogden before he shall proceed with business regarding the ship's supercargo, Eli Hayden. Encloses Shaw's draft on Ogden, writing "I am under the Necessity of giving this Trouble, as so large a Bill will not readily sell."

Expresses disappointment with Mr. Peck's ideas regarding the planned construction of a ship. Writes, "If his demand should be so Extravagant as we cannot comply with, shall the ship stand still, or shall another person be appointed to Construct & superinted [sic] the Building. I expect there is other Ship Builders besides Mr. Peck." Samuel Shaw gave Parkman the authority to hire Peck; Parkman asks Knox's advice, since he cannot hire another builder besides Peck without Shaw's approval. Discusses business related to Samuel Shaw and Messrs [Nicholas] Hoffman and [Son] and Shaw's upcoming China trip on the Jay. Notes the Hoffman's will be informing Parkman of their situation concerning Shaw. They are willing to advance Parkman, on honor, $2000. If the Jay arrives they will replace him the other $2000 that way if the Jay is lost Parkman only has to wait for the insurance to be recovered. Consists of two letters written in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide de camp. In the first, which composes the top half of the page, Colonel Crane and Lieutenant Colonel Stevens inform Major General Knox that upon inspection, a quantity of salted beef in the contractor's store has been found "unmerchantable and unfit for use." The bottom half of the page consists of a letter from Knox to [Daniel] Parker and [William] Duer. Knox informs them that the beef is putrefied and "grows worse and worse, so that I have been obliged to order the inspection."

Knox, Commander at West Point, writes to business partners William Duer and Daniel Parker: "A very considerable part of the Garrison, upwards of two hundred, are at this time sick with the measles and there are more to have them,- In this situation, fresh meat is absolutely essential to their well being-" Requests beef, veal, mutton, "or other small meats," to be sent to West Point immediately.

Discusses his financial resources, along with his plans to return to Boston after he leaves West Point.

Signed by various underwriters. A policy of assurance for Henry Knox. Insures various amounts of money for cargos shipped between Thomastown [Thomaston, Maine?] to Bermuda. The vessel is insured for risk of "capture & condemnation" only, cargo is covered against all risks. Various sums of money are also listed next to each underwriter's signature. Noted recorded on 24 August 1797. Docket notes received 30 December 1797. Document is partially printed with information written by hand.

Asks Lewis to deliver Mr. [George] Joy's "deposition respecting Mr. [Daniel] Parker having directed him [Mr. Joy] to pay the money which Mr. Parker took out of the funds of the Ship Empress of China in New York in the beginning of the year 1784 ..." Also asks Lewis to deliver a copy of a paper containing Parker's signature in regards to his [Parker's] conduct on a particular occasion. Says Mr. [Thomas] Randall, who is Samuel Shaw's partner, is wishing to have the matter closed as soon as possible.

Verifies that the ship the Empress of China left New York bound for China in 1784, and that prior to its departure, he was obliged to withdraw $2,300 on behalf of the owners. Notes, "if Mr. Parker will subscribe the certificate I think it will effectually serve Mr [Samuel] Shaw whose case is a cruel hard one-"

Page 3 bears an autograph endorsement signed by Henry Knox describing the document as "an unsigned paper delivered by Manor Genl Maunsell in his brittannic Majesty's service to HKnox."
