At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Van Deusen apologizes for not paying Robert, Jr. for iron, and assures him that this is not due to carelessness, but to the numerous misfortunes that have befallen him. He promises to pay his debt as soon as he has the resources available to do so. Docketed on address leaf.
