Depicts a serious young man in a waterproof cap and cape, holding an oil torch. The image has been painted to suggest light from the torch. The "wide awakes" led processions supporting Lincoln in the election of 1860. Nevins "Emergence of Lincoln" p. 305 describes such a procession in New York. This document is a copy of the Constitutional Telegraphe published in 1800. It reports on the "Triumph of Democracy," the funeral of Washington (with diagram of procession) and reports a speech of Gov. McKean. The top of the newpaper is decorated with a masthead of an eagle and the motto "We advocate the rights of man." The newspaper was active from 1799-1802 and supported Thomas Jefferson during his Presidency.
