Colonel Laurens communicates George Washington's request that Knox send "one of the pieces taken in the Redout [sic] by the french troops...to the regiment of Gattenois." This was in accordance with general orders issued 20 October 1781. The ordnance was seized in the Battle of Yorktown. Laurens had marched to Yorktown as an aide to General George Washington.

States that Washington, however, "desired me to translate the Article Cincinnati & send it on to you together with the paragraph of Mr. [Thomas] Jefferson's letter."

Delivered to Colonel Carrington the horses Governor Lee provided, for use in the Southern States, but one died before they reached Alexandria. The cannon Governor Lee furnished the army with were initially to be used against Lord Cornwallis, but had to be left with Rochambeau to defend York and Gloucester. Says he wrote to Knox yesterday and enclosed intelligence on the Indians. He also asked for the money promised his state in that letter.

Writes that he has written to Count D'Estaing and Count de Rochambeau for a list of the officers of the royal Army and Navy of France that are members of the Society of the Cincinnati in order to execute their diplomas. Knox received Murray's letter of June 3, 1799. Knox tells Murray that the "legality principle of the Judges acting as Commissioners, will be decided by the Supreme Court August next." Then, Knox, believes, those recommended by the circuit courts will be "placed on the lists." Knox then discusses with Murray the ongoing events in France. Knox says that the violence of Robespierre "and the affairs of France may near be better." Knox also writes, "thank God our pilot lives, and is firm in the good pursuit of the true interest of his country."

Writes that time is passing and he does not have any new artificers to help construct the new barracks to house the infantry. Colonel [John] Crane's party is stationed in the woods, and will want teams (he may be referring to oxen) to "begin to draw the timber to the water side tomorrow or next day." Major Villefranche also will want teams to draw timber for the barracks on Constitution Island. Expects all of the hauling of timber to occupy twelve teams, and would like to know when and where the teams are gathering.

Found out from a letter from Constable written to another person, that "He suspected that Jackson, and I, had a purchase in contemplation - how he discovered this, I do not know?" In his letter, Constable stated that he thought it was too far into the legislative session to complete the deal. Says "If he meant this his opperations will be postponed untill next winter - you can best determine what steps ought to be taken in the mean time with the Committee." Asks Knox to forward an enclosed letter (not included) to a French gentleman at Fort Pitt.
