Garner (possibly Gardner), Assistant Adjutant General, writes from Head Quarters of the Department of Alabama and West Florida, near Pensacola. He replies to a letter from Milton, Governor of Florida, and relates that his commanding general, Braxton Bragg, "regrets that he has no guns Engineers or Artillery officers to spare, Every resourse he possesses is ... needed for the defence of this point, now menaced with formidable forces." He declines Milton's offer of cavalry. States that Lieutenant [G] is discharged and on his way home. Marked as a copy.

Davis discusses the defense of Florida. He has received Milton's letter requesting aid to Florida. He notes the need to defend Florida, but is unable to send troops. He will, however, send arms and officers. Letter written primarily in the hand of Davis' private secretary Burton Harrison, with a ten line addition in Davis's hand and signed by Davis.

Georgia Governor Brown writes to Florida Governor Perry about the importance of taking control of Pensacola, Florida. He acknowledges "that it will be regarded as a bold move, but it is better to look danger full in the face, than by inaction to give our enemies the advantage." He explains that it is "a key position" because "a strong Naval force there may control the commerce of the Gulf of Mexico" and that "its occupation by federal troops would place us in imminent danger." Marked private.

Grant replies to Johnson's letter and encloses his version of an anecdote told by Abraham Lincoln about Alexander Stephens and his overcoat at the Hampton Roads, Virginia Peace Conference. State he will use the anecdote in his memoirs. The story describes Stephens as wearing a very large and heavy overcoat, and when he removed the coat, he looked to weigh only 90 pounds. Grant relays that Lincoln remarked about Stephens in his coat, "wasn't it the biggest shuck and the littlest ear ever you did see."

Letter endorsed by William T. Sherman at the top of the first page. States that this morning he delivered the news to Union General William T. Sherman that the terms of his negotiation for surrender with Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston was rejected by Stanton as the Secretary of War. He remarks that Sherman expected this. Reports that word has been sent to Johnston terminating the truce. Indicates that Sherman's negotiations were based on what he thought was already sanctioned by the President. Letter written on "Headquarters, Military Division of the Mississippi" letterhead.

Confederate Colonel Gibson writes to the Confederate Secretary of War to protest being relieved of command and demoted to an inferior office. He had succeeded Brigadier General Daniel Adams after Adams was wounded at Murfreesboro and had just been reassigned to "conscript and recruiting service." He considers the action "arbitrary and unjust - as depriving me of my dearest rights as a soldier and degrading me in the eyes of my comrades in arms." Letter written from the Headquarters of Adams' Brigade.

Consular documents from Bahia, Brazil: 2-page "Marine Note of protest" and 10-page "Public Instrument of Declaration and protest." Clerical signature of Henry Libbey, master of the ship "Kate Prince" on page 2. Two clerical signatures for Peixoto on pages 2 and 11. Peixoto's signature is also on page 2 and 12. Document says Libbey was in command of the "Kate Prince," a ship based out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, that was captured by the Confederate privateer "Shenandoah" on 12 November 1864. He was released after signing a $40,000 bond. This document is a copy of the protest of that bond.…

One of Bachman's six lithographic views of the Confederate States in the series: "Panorama of the Seat of War." Shows the American Gulf Coast from Vermillion Bay, Louisiana, east to Santa Rosa Sound, Florida, and inland as far as Vicksburg, Mississippi, from a perspective facing north. All the major towns on the coast are located, as well as roads, railways, lighthouses, and sites of military interest. Provides detail on the defenses of New Orleans, and Pensacola, Florida, which appear to be under blockade.
