At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Davis writes as President of the Confederate States to the Governor of Florida about enforcing the Conscript Act in the state and encloses a copy of the instructions (not present). Addresses the issue of physically unfit men reporting for duty and directs that it is the duty of the mustering and inspecting officers to refuse them. Letter written to Milton in Tallahassee, Florida.
