Writes he has been sick, but has continued his duty, despite this. Says his illness was brought on by exposure and neglect, but by the time his regiment moves, he should be better. Believes he already sent Ogden a photograph, but says he will send another as soon as he can. Notes when his regiment moved out of Warrington, Virginia, the Rebel citizens of the town "expressed regret." After leaving Warrington, their division got into an engagement at the Rappahannock in which he judged the Rebels to be overconfident. His regiment did not fight in this engagement. Writes he was wounded and taken prisoner on 8 May at Spotsylvania, Virginia. Says he was shot in the left knee, but the bone was not hit. He was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, and escaped on the first of July, but was soon recaptured and sent to Macon, Georgia. He was then transported to a jail in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was offered parole and removed to the Roper Hospital. He is in good health, and states, "no bad effects resulted from my wound."

Notes his company has changed its name to Company D, 16th Regiment. Says he is presently on duty in Chambersburg, where he is being quartered in comfortable barracks. Notes eighteen Rebels were brought in, but are going to be sent to Fort Delaware. Some of the men were thought to be spies, and were sent to jail. Requests that Ogden send him a couple of undershirts, in the care of the bearer of this letter, as his were stolen from his knapsack. Written on "Head Quarters Provost Marshal..." stationery.

Miller reports, "...the fleet footed Rebels have Run again from york town, and i feel very sorry for it But i suppose it is all for the best..." Notes that his company's picket line runs through a "significant farm, owned by a family of the F.F.V. or first families of Virginia..."

Writes that the soldiers are celebrating Washington's Birthday with continual cannon fire. Says he just received news that Charleston, South Carolina is "in the possession of our [Union] forces." Sherman is marching for North Carolina and several of the Rebels are "deserting very fast." Tells Ogden that he saw William Boles, a soldier with whom he stood guard as a member of the Oneida Cavalry, at General Ulysses Grant's Headquarters. Thanks Mrs. Ogden and Mrs. Perot and gives his regards to "all enquiring." Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Writes from Camp Stoneman. Thanks Ogden for agreeing to hold his money for him while he completes his military service. Says he mentions that Ogden suggested putting the money into Government Bonds, and instructs her to do whatever she sees fit. He will be going to Washington to receive five hundred dollars for his service, which he will express to her. Tells Ogden to send the money to his father if he does not survive the war. Mentions his sadness over the death of President Abraham Lincoln, as well as the falling of Mobile, Alabama.

Tells Ogden about an expedition to avenge the death of Colonel Dalgreen. Also reports on the Rebels' mistreatment of captured officers of General Hugh Kilpatrick's command.
