Informs his son, "I learned to day of another outbreak on Political Matters. The Union Party so called held a meeting somewhere in the vicinity of [struck: St. Paris] Carysville [Ohio] and on their return home they came in collision with some Democrats and one of the Union men struck a Democrat with his cane and he resented by stoning, when Jim McFarlan drew a revolver and shot the man in the breast... one of the Republicans was shot...
