Rumors are passed along about an invasionary fleet sailing from Holland to England carrying the Prince of O[range]. Pynchon hopes that the news of the Dutch invasion of England is untrue, as otherwise Europe would be covered by "yt Efusion of Ch[ris]tian Blood," as all parties would gain more if they were "uniting together agt ye the French who are not ye best Neighbors." He also sends news of a battle between the forces of Prince Louis XIV…

Title: Indian letter.... [with:] An Address to Drunkards [temperance broadside]

Temperance broadside printed by N. Coverly. The broadside (possibly playing-off recent news relating to Indians?) quotes an excerpt from a letter of Capt. Hendricks of the Stockbridge Nation to Col. Pickering, 1794 in which he says that the enemy of the Indian "is named RUM! and he is your son, and begat by the white people; and we believe you have the power to control him...." The lower half of the broadside has a general Christian sermon against rum entitled "The Address to Drunkards," which concludes with the admonition, "Reader, art thou guilty of the sin of drunkenness?"

Writes that the rainy weather prohibits soldiers from drilling. Mentions that he visited the Christian Commission and got three or four papers (newspapers or writing paper; the duties of the Commission's delegates required them to provide reading material and writing material to the soldiers). Remarks that the Commission is very willing to give and are indeed "the soldier's friend". Wheeler is happy to hear that his nephew Welly (Wellington Spohn) has not forgotten him and promises to teach his nephew how to handle a rifle and turn him into a military man.

"Twelve men from the Regt. will be detailed to perform the execution ... I hope that I will not be one the number he has a wife and two children she came to see him a few days ago."
