In the letter, Laurens W. Wolcott describes how they got across Bear River to meet the enemy where they immediately began fighting. The enemy rescued some of their prisoners. The next day they marched back and camped near a mountain.

Laurens W Wolcott writes that the 42nd regiment passed by and he got to see people he hadn't seen in a while. One of four gunboats was captured in battle. Afterwards more than half the company was sick but they are feeling better now. The weather has been good and a lot of fruit is growing. The letter written in Camp Montgomery.

Henry tells his sister he has heard a rumor that there had been a "big fight in Kentucky" in which they the Confederates had lost 11,000 men, and Generals Beauregard and Pillow had been cut off.

One letter addressed to Hattie Figures from Henry S. Figures dated Camp Bartow, March 31, 1862. Mentions a soldier named Mr. Robinson who abandoned fighting and ran away from Union Army fire. Henry tells his sister he will be home in "four weeks at the fastest, as our time is up on the 26th of next month." Henry tells his sister to call [Mefs] Cassie Robins a coward as he "ran from the yankees without firing a gun." Also, Henry notes that Pa will most likely not go to war as they are taking no more 12 month troops, and he doubts Pa could stand a 3 month campaign, let alone a 3 year one.

Henry Stokes Figures describes his movements until Gettysburg where he managed to escape unharmed. Then they walked through the mountains until it became too steep. The next day they went to Hagerstown. He is now acting as Adjutant General for the brigade. This letter goes into detail about the battle and the aftermath of Gettysburg in general, and Henry's involvement.

This is a proclamation stating that any citizen arrested for their political opinions on the Civil War within the State of Missouri are to be released as per an agreement between Major General Price, and Major General Freemont. It also states that there will be no more arrests or threats as a result of political opinions from citizens and that "the war now progressing shall be exclusively confined to armies in the field" Written at Cassvile and Springfield.

Edwin Jackson writes to tell Bill that he and his brother, Henry, enlisted in the Army in August and have been fighting the Dakota Indians. He graphically describes the dead left by the Dakota attacks on settlers, including a German family and a pregnant woman. He writes about being in two different battles, the Battle of Fort Ridgely and Battle of Wood Lake; he describes combat and how many dead and wounded there were on each side. Edwin Jackson mentions four fights with Indians in the Dakota Territory and the army's destruction of their abandoned supplies. He complains of the bad water and hard marching, but assures his brother of his continued health. He tells of the birth of Henry's son, named Edwin "by [Jackson's] request." He muses on what the troop will do next. He also reveals that his photographs (see #5) had been sent to someone with his same name in Company C, who threw them away.
