Concerns the campaigns against Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, commenting on the activities of generals Nelson A. Miles, George Crook, and Philip H. Sheridan. Last four pages of a document, numbered 50-53, possibly of an annual report. Crazy Horse surrendered in May of 1877, after 3 months of inactivity. The Winter expedition Sherman mentions, leaving Fort Letterman on 27 October, attacked Crazy Horse on 7 January 1877, making it likely that this report was written in the intervening months.

Collection of six letters by a soldier in the 42nd Mississippi Volunteers. A letter from 7 April 1863 describes a skirmish and includes an additional note from 8 April, which appears to be addressed to a slave: "I have been a good master to you... stay close to home with your mistress.... Your Master." His final letter of 12 April 1863 says he will desert if he can't get home.

Cushing enlisted in June 1861 in the 1st Rhode Island Artillery, and was promoted to the 4th U.S. Army Light Artillery in November 1861. In the letter of 19 December 1862, he discusses his experiences on the march with his troops. Key battle material relating to the Chattanooga Campaign appears in letters dated 21 and 28 September, 10 and 14 October, and 22 November 1863. Letter from 28 September also contains a drawing showing artillery positions at Chickamauga.

Entries cover period 1 April - 16 September 1864, and document Sherman's March to Atlanta and the Battles of Atlanta and Jonesborough. In the first part of the diary he describes his post as a surgical nurse in an army field hospital, discussing amputations, surgeries and deaths. This letter marks the advent of unfettered Union control of the Mississippi River. The Vicksburg garrison had surrendered to Grant on July 4, four days prior to this note.
