Writes that the soldiers prefer Rosecrans to Buell. Reports that General Gilbert was arrested at Perryville. Continues to write about the battle of Perryville, which has led him to believe that rebels are not cowards but "brave as yankees dare to be." Points out that many of the dead and wounded were barefoot. Also writes that the company was armed with minnie rifles, the best in the service.

Reports that he has a flesh wound in his right hip from the recent battle (battle of Murfreesboro). Also writes that he was taken prisoner and paroled. Ninety-six men from his company went to battle of which twenty-five men were killed or wounded. Reports that the commander of the company was taken prisoner.

Writes that his wound is doing better. The main part of the army is about two miles south of Murfreesboro and the rebels are far ahead of them. States that his company has lost more men in the three battles (Pea Ridge, Perryville, Murfreesboro) than any other company in the regiment. Of forty-six men, twenty-seven have been killed and wounded. Writes that the regiment has suffered greatly because Johnson's and Davis' division fell back which gave the rebels an opportunity to cross fire.

Writes that he dreads reading the list of the dead and wounded of his regiment. Reports that Colonel Bonneville has issued an order to call back all absentees for duty. Hopes to be exchanged soon. Includes a letter regarding the cost of supplies to sustain an army and asks that the writing be preserved in his journal back home. Reports that four steamboats were burned at the levee and are said to have been set afire with the intentions of burning some gunboats in between them. Writes that he is enjoying Thanksgiving in celebration of taking Mission Ridge, Lookout Mountain and the valley. Reports that his regiment suffered more in proportion to numbers at Chickamauga than Murfreesboro. Writes that he got through the battle of (Mission Ridge) without a scratch and that none in his company were killed or wounded. Believes that the loss of the enemy is greater than that of his regiment.

A continuation of the previous letter. Writes that he marched to Chickamauga Creek the day before and spotted rebels burning bridges and their own baggage. Reports that the men have taken 80 pieces of rebel artillery and estimates that they will have 15,000 rebel prisoners. Writes that the envelope and paper are of Confederate style, the envelope being made of wallpaper.

Report that they are south of the Kenessaw Mountain where they can see Yankee shells exploding.
