Forrest, black soldiers, assassination of Lincoln, and mustering out. Includes a Hymn Book, 3 military papers, 28 pre-war items (letters and documents) and 88 post-war or undated letters or documents.

Knox served as Lieutenant in the 1st Connecticut Artillery. The letters discuss the sieges of Yorktown and Petersburg, support Lincoln's re-election, condemn McClellan's Peace Platform, and mention William, a freeman working for McClellan as a servant. States that William was the most consistent "Christian" he ever met.

Most of the letters are written by E. S. Russell to his wife. There is a possibility that some of the letters are out of order due to no year being listed. Letters discuss camp life, marching experiences, and his health. Throughout his letters his health slowly deteriorates. One document appears to be a prayer written in German. Collection includes five items with folk cures, incantations and recipes.

Warrant ordering them to arrest Thomas Gilpin, Thomas Afflick, Charles Jervis, William David Smith, Thomas Pike, and Charles Eddy. The individuals were prominent Quakers, who were suspected of Loyalist sympathies. Signed as the Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, one day after the Battle of Brandywine.

Signed by Knox once in the text and once at the close. Witnessed and signed by Samuel D. Parker, Thomas Welsh, Jr., Henry Cabot, and William Sullivan. Appoints his wife Lucy as sole executor, leaving the management and division of assets to her judgment. Attests to his "unclouded belief" in the existence of "the Omnipotent, Omniscient, and omnipresent head of the Universe." Also expresses his belief in "the durability and immortal existence of my mind or soul -and that it is bound on an infinite voyage throughout the immensity of the Universe." Written four years before his death.

Writing as a cadet at West Point, Grant offers self-consciously romantic comments to his cousin about the Hudson Highlands. He also complains about "a few of the drawbacks," such as insufficient blankets and money, difficult lessons, the lack of familiar faces or women, tight clothing, and eight demerits he received that very day for missing church. Earliest known Grant letter.
