Title: to Frederick W. Porter

Jackson's letter is one page, written on the back of a two page letter sent to him by Porter. The address is also from Porter's letter. Porter's letter was sent from Philadelphia 27 November 1838. Porter's letter explains to Jackson that "A friend in Tennessee", unnamed, has paid for him to become a member of the American Sunday School Union, and explains the Union's work. In Jackson's reply he refuses to accept the membership, stating "Charity begins at home." He will not accept charity from others, and cannot afford to pay the fee himself, though he agrees with the Union's work.

Among other undertakings, Herring describes leading soldiers into baptismal water, attending a funeral, participating in various meetings, and interacting with various Christian converts.

Wormeley was a prominent organizer of women's aid societies in New England during the Civil War. She also served on U.S. Sanitary Commission hospital ships along the Virginia peninsula. She became "Lady Superintendent" of the Lowell General Hospital in September 1862, but poor health forced her to give up the position. A long, detailed letter from Bibb, the noted runaway slave and conductor on the Underground Railroad, telling Calkins of Wilbraham, Mass., how his money was spent in aiding runaway slaves who had traveled on the Underground Railroad, particularly those who had just arrived in Canada. In part: "The next sum was used to aid a sick man who had [been] but a short time in Canada before he was attacked with the intiminant fever.... Taken by Gutekunst. A civilian man wearing an unusually patterned, light colored frock coat is standing fourth from the left of the lone woman. This same man can be seen in GLC 511.01.0228 standing left of the tree immediately in front of the large tent in the right foreground. Several soldiers are joined by a group of medical sewards, civilian nurses and members from one of the civilian relief organizations [i.e., the Christian Commission] are standing next to the tents.
