Had understood that the "monied men" of Massachusetts would be providing funding as well, but they have not. New York has approved regulations limiting the amount that state will contribute, and Pennsylvania has contributed some money but must allocate much of it to its "own pension list." He comments: "The negro troops did very well except the 8th U.S. Colored Troops, which is a new regiment, having only left Philadelphia a few weeks ago. They broke and run making scarcely any fight at all. but even this was no worse than one of the white regiments which did the same thing. Two of the colored regiments however, the 54th Massachusetts and the 1st North Carolina, are said to have done splendidly." He advises his mother on family…

He is waiting to join up with his regiment. Due to the expense of staying in the city, he had to release his servant, a contraband from Virginia. He thinks the rebels are in a precarious situation in Maryland and adds that as long as the war lasts, business will be good in Buffalo.

He asks his mother to send various articles of clothing and leather goods such as sword belts, boots and a holster. The regimental quartermaster is returning so Walbridge may have to return to his company. Describes an officer's dinner and a visit to a local plantation where the overseer complained about Union troops taking all the grain. He encloses a Secesh pay roll and buttons, confederate money, and a court deposition dated 1689, which he took from Warwick Court House [none of these items are included in the collection].

Describes the vast destruction of local property: "There are the ruins of several magnificent places between here and Nashville. The soldiers have stripped down the fences, cut down beautiful shade trees, and in some places commenced on the houses for fuel. Residences worth two years ago $100,000 are not now worth $2,000."
