One photograph entitled, "Incidents of the War. Ruins at Manassas," taken by Alexander Gardner dated March 1862. This page was taken from "Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War." Image is of a young boy, a dead horse, and a Federal soldier posed amid the ruins of an enflamed Confederate building and numerous broken wagons left behind from the ensuing evacuation. An abandoned Confederate freight train remains on the tracks on the left side of the photograph.

Writes to his brother in Dennysville, Maine. Briefly mentions sleigh riding in the winter. Informs that he went to Washington on the railroad [Baltimore and Ohio Railroad] and describes how the trains run, "the difference between a rail-road and any other is that the carriages run on a bar of iron or rail instead of running on the ground." An extra sheet of the Washington D.C. "Star." Contains three articles: first one from West Virginia on General Morris's attack against a division of Wise's army near Buckanon. Second article on the Tennessee disunionsts seizing the railroad between Nashville and Louisville. Third article states that General McClellan's army was fighting in western Virginia. Name in pencil on verso says "Hayden." Sheet is thin and has a partial tear along a fold line. Edges are frayed as well.

Grant, Commander in Chief of the United States Army, writes to Stanton, Secretary of War. Relates his receipt of a dispatch from General Foster (possibly John Gray Foster), describing the capture of Savannah, Georgia "with artillery, munitions of War, railroad Cars and cotton." Referring to Confederate General William Joseph Hardee, writes "I wish Hardee's fifteen to eighteen thousand of a garrison could have been added to the other captures. It is a good thing the way it stands and the country may well rejoice over it." Marked at the top as "Cipher."
