Ballou was promoted from Captain to Major on the day Morey was killed.

Notes that he was cautious to express his opinions when recently visiting Washington, D.C. Written on Pennsylvania Executive Chamber stationery. Autograph endorsement signed by General George G. Meade on second page.

Was shot in the shoulder by grape shot, breaking it badly…he lived about twenty minutes past…[and] was buried with as much respect as possible. Buried near a tree with his name written on a board and nailed to the tree above him." Letter written from "Camp 2nd Vermont in the Field."
