"[T]he Army is being divided up and distributed over the country to guard the Points already in our possession" because "there are Guerrilla Parties all through the country" and 'it will be necessary to put a stop to such work before the main Army can advance any farther with safety." He believes that it is "safe to conclude that active operations have ceased" and they will have a chance to recruit men for the regiments. Signed with the rank of Captain.

Porter writes to John's father on his behalf. He reports that both Henry and John are well. Henry was not wounded at Perrysville, "he and his comrades withstood the storm of Iron hail like veterans," though his regiment lost many men. John sends word that he will write himself as soon as he has time. Porter praises John as both a friend and a soldier.

sister [Sophia Parrott] He is glad that she is improving. Eight to ten thousand men are building five forts and when they are finished "this place will be the strongest Fortified p[l]ace in Tenn[essee]." There are skirmishes nearly every day. A shell came very close to taking his head off but he heard it coming in time to jump off his horse and the shell passed across his saddle. He has had command of the regiment since the battle of 31 December and has heard from some of his men taken prisoner then.

He believes he will be well enough to rejoin the army soon.

He may resign if his health does not improve but stands "on the top of the pile here now and I intend to keep there." He sent a notice of his marriage to his father and invites him to put in the local paper if he so wishes.

father [C. Parrott] John has been back "in Dixey" for about a week. They are guarding a pontoon bridge and he explains what one is to his father. "Boats are anchored in the River and stringers placed from one boat to another and covered with plank[s]." His regiment has only one year left to serve and he hopes "the war will be over by that time." He relates how popular he and Henry are in Illinois and describes the parties the townspeople had for his wedding. He plans to settle in Sterling, Illinois and start a business.
