At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He writes in regards to a local soldier with an amputated leg. His doctor recommended him to Mr. Douglass of Springfield for a limb, but perhaps their company can give him a better deal. He remarks on their competition in the City and inquires if they have lowered their prices
