Sherman writes about the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862. He discusses his experiences in it, the strategy of the battle, the officers' uniforms, and various Union generals. He explains his daring position at Shiloh, "I do not think I exposed myself at Shiloh more than was necessary from the shape of the ground and the nature of my men." He writes that he had to give orders that usually would have been left to officers of a lower rank and therefore had to be out in the open. Makes a correction in pencil in the second line of the fourth stanza. The book prints the constitution, by-laws, meeting proceedings, reports of officers, a list of members, etc. Also contains text of Sherman's address to his comrades. Original green cloth gilt stamped binding.

Serves as an official United States Presidential form for appointments, containing an image of an eagle at the top of the page and a knight's helmet, weapons, and musical instruments resting amongst several flags at the bottom of the page. Contains a blue War Office seal.

Walker's "true copy" of Crawford and Seymour's first hand account of the meeting between Colonel Louis Wigfall and Major Robert Anderson, during which Fort Sumter was surrendered. Walker copied, in pencil, Crawford and Seymour's written account which details the conversation between Wigfall, Anderson, and other officers. Wigfall tells Anderson "You have defended your flag nobly, Sir. You have done all that can be done.Your fort is on fire. Let us stop this, Sir." Anderson agrees to surrender the fort under the conditions he proposed earlier to General Beauregard, to which Wigfall accepts…

Firsthand account of the negotiations for the surrender of Fort Sumter. Details conversation between Major Robert Anderson and Captain Lee negotiating terms of surrender. Finishes Crawford's narrative begun in GLC01127.01. Recounts the conversation between Captain Lee and Major Anderson. Anderson had already told Louis Wigfall he would surrender, but Wigfall was not actually sent by Beauregard. Lee was Beauregard's true emissary, and he and Anderson agreed on the official terms of surrender. Also lists men wounded on 13 April as Thomas Kernin, James Hays, and Edward Galloway, here…

He replies to a letter from Milton, Governor of Florida, and relates that his commanding general, Braxton Bragg, "regrets that he has no guns Engineers or Artillery officers to spare, Every resourse he possesses is ... needed for the defence of this point, now menaced with formidable forces." He declines Milton's offer of cavalry. States that Lieutenant [G] is discharged and on his way home. Marked as a copy.

Georgia Governor Brown writes to Florida Governor Perry about the importance of taking control of Pensacola, Florida. He acknowledges "that it will be regarded as a bold move, but it is better to look danger full in the face, than by inaction to give our enemies the advantage." He explains that it is "a key position" because "a strong Naval force there may control the commerce of the Gulf of Mexico" and that "its occupation by federal troops would place us in imminent danger." Grant replies to Johnson's letter and encloses his version of an anecdote told by Abraham Lincoln about Alexander Stephens and his overcoat at the Hampton Roads, Virginia Peace Conference. State he will use the anecdote in his memoirs. The story describes Stephens as wearing a very large and heavy overcoat, and when he removed the coat, he looked to weigh only 90 pounds. Grant relays that Lincoln remarked about Stephens in his coat, "wasn't it the biggest shuck and the littlest ear ever you did see."

Letter endorsed by William T. Sherman at the top of the first page. States that this morning he delivered the news to Union General William T. Sherman that the terms of his negotiation for surrender with Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston was rejected by Stanton as the Secretary of War. He remarks that Sherman expected this. Reports that word has been sent to Johnston terminating the truce. Indicates that Sherman's negotiations were based on what he thought was already sanctioned by the President. Letter written on "Headquarters, Military Division of the Mississippi" letterhead.

Written by order of General Sherman but signed by J. H. Hammond as Adjutant General. Assigns Brigadier General Jacob Gartner Lauman commander of 6th Brigade. Provides for the garrisoning of Fort Pickering by three regiments of regulars and one or two companies of sick and wounded. Requests that the post Quarter Master provide a storehouse, so that the men about to march may leave their excess baggage behind. Directs the men to be ready to march by 26 November. These maneuvers eventually culminated on Sherman's assault on Chickasaw Bluffs, an early part of the Vicksburg campaign.
