Includes a dedication written on the front cover, likely to his brother-in-law James William Paige, stating "My dear friend & brother, accept this, as a copy of my last speech in Congress. Yours affectionately ... " Signed by Daniel Webster. Informs his brother-in-law that he can not go to the British Provinces in Canada until he resigns as Secretary of State, a position to which he was reappointed in 1850. Discusses whether he will live in Washington, D.C. or Boston following his resignation. Regrets that Willie (possibly Paige's son) cannot come visit. Based on the handwriting, possibly written by Webster's clerk, George Abbot, and signed by Webster.

General Richard B. Garnett has ordered that Wortham's battalion move its position and await further orders. At bottom is an autograph note signed by Washington, to Wortham, reading "I will wait for you here. Come as quickly as possible. No news." Written two miles outside of Washington, D.C. After receiving the note, Washington forwarded it to Wortham, and added his note at the bottom. James A. Signed diary including printed almanac and eclipse calendar in the opening pages. Mixter writes from various locations. Relates the events of 1861, spending most of his time divided between his home in Hanson, Massachusetts, and his workplace in Boston. Reports political affairs, discussing the secession question with colleagues, and holding a Union meeting. Writes to various governmental officials, including Judge John J. Fragment of banquet program, probably for a celebration following the victory of the Civil War. Sherman presided. Poems, songs, and reports given for each army. Verso has illustration of Union flags with lists of victories. On May 24 a Grand Review parade displayed all troops in Washington, D.C.

Mentions visiting Varnum's home in Dracut, Massachusetts, but missing him since Varnum was in Congress at the time. Comments on the importance of education, both religious and civil. Discusses the growing strength of Republicanism, and asserts that the "success of the Christian Religion, depends much on the example and patronage of civil Rules." Inquires about the new city of Washington, D.C. Varnum was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts from 1795-1811.
