This collection is a series of letters and other items from Private George C. Clapp. Private Clapp was born in Northampton, Massachusetts. He was mustered into G Company of the 37th Massachusetts Infantry on July 15, 1862 when he was a 23-year-old bookbinder. The regiment then journeyed to Washington D.C. and became part of the Army of the Potomac. As part of the Army of the Potomac, Clapp saw battle at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania. Writes he was wounded and taken prisoner on 8 May at Spotsylvania, Virginia. Says he was shot in the left knee, but the bone was not hit. He was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, and escaped on the first of July, but was soon recaptured and sent to Macon, Georgia. He was then transported to a jail in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was offered parole and removed to the Roper Hospital. He is in good health, and states, "no bad effects resulted from my wound."

Inscription on verso: "723. Confederate Dead on the Battlefield. This view was taken near Spotsylvania Court House, May 12, 1864, after Ewell's attack on the Federal right. The dead man is one of the Rebel General Ewell's soldiers, just as he fell. There is very little of the 'romance of war' to be found in such scenes as this; the fair face of nature is smeared and stained with the blood of the poor victims of war. Every rod of ground hereabouts has one or more dead soldiers laying on it."
