[William Starke] Rosecrans is removed and Gen. [Ulysses S.] Grant takes Command." The last page of the letter is written the following day.

Mentions the defeat of General William Rosecrans (possibly referring to the Battle of Chickamauga fought on 19-20 September 1863). Writes "if the war is not closed in the coming year it will show those who have the reins of Government in their hands are incompetent to the Task, and if the Democrats make a judicious selection for the Presidency, say for instance General G.[George] B. Reports to his brother from "Camp on Cowan's Plantation," telling him "A more beautiful morning never dawned in the state of Miss. than this..." Mentions they received marching orders but they do not know where they are heading. Continues the letter the next day, noting that he went on picket duty and that even though it rained, he and the rest of the soldiers had a good time.

Provides details about the war, mentioning that "General [John] Sedgewick and [possibly Major General William] French made an attack jointly on a part of [General Robert E.] Lee's Army [possibly referring to the Battle of Rappahannock Station fought on 7 November 1863] and killed and wounded a number of Rebs and captured near 2,000 prisoners Our loss killed and wounded was 400." Informs him that they expect to have rail tracks from the "Broad G. Rail" line laid shortly. Includes a three cent stamp on the envelope.

Discusses a meeting that was held at their house concerning conscription, noting that he hoped to "stir up enough people to volunteer to prevent the draft...Our Township's apportionment is 25 if raised by volunteering but if raised by Draft 38 men. I have no idea that the men will be raised against the 5th of Jany and then there will be a great fluttering among those fighting abolitionists for fear of it striking them..." Remarks, "it has always appeared to me that it was a great injustice to the soldiers in the field not to have force to fill up the decimated Regiments." Notes the railroad…

Writes he is sorry to hear of his family sickness, commenting "were it not for sickness we would not know how to appreciate health properly." Remarks that he has been enjoying the nice weather they have been having and states, "how can you keep from falling in love I find it almost impossible, such weather makes me feel good and incline towards the good, kind, and beautiful beings." Informs him that he thinks his regiment is going down South again soon.

Possibly written by Joseph Maitland, based on content. Begins letter to Bell with a love poem, "Old Song." Tells her that he was thinking of her and the song came into his mind, especially because of the lines, "'never till life and memory perish, can I forget how dear thou art to me.' " Writes that he wants to wrap his arms around her, and that he could express his feelings much better in person. Asks her "not to tell any one the nonsense I write to you, or they certainly would think I was a big fool."

Blanchard writes to Mary Wright from Jackson, Tennessee, "...one of the most delightful cities I ever saw." Says the aristocracy of the south resides there. Mentions many slaves escaped to their lines and rewards of two-hundred dollars were being offered for their return. Informs they are called "bluebelied yankees." Upon the occupation of the city, "about 600 negroe girls elegantly dresed in their silks and satins came out to meet us each caring a rose in their black hands..." Reports going to church with "darkies" and being impressed with the sermon. Letter is faded and has an emblem.

Comments on the beauty of Lake Providence. Mentions it is one mile wide and fifteen miles long. Reports his camp extends on the southern shore for several miles and they are constructing boats.
