Serves as a receipt of sale for 2 million acres of land in Maine, from Henry Jackson and Royal Flint to Henry Knox and William Greene. States that Jackson and Flint had clear title, having originally purchased the land from Samuel Philips, Leonard Jarvis and John Read. Notes that a copy of this document was delivered to both Henry Knox and William Greene. Date previously inferred, written in pencil. Most likely written in Massachusetts.

Writes from Camp Reynolds outside Pittsburgh. Says his health is good. Comments on his "last" holidays in the army: "...we had a splendid dinner...given to us by the U.S. Christian Commission..." Reports that New Years Eve was the most lonesome day he's experienced since being in the army. Discusses the marriages of several friends back home and hopes there will be women left for them when they return from the war. Does not expect to get a furlough. Informs Joseph that he goes on guard duty every third day.

Reports the sleighing is very good. Updates him on all the weddings. Says Grier is "pretty good at minding what I say indeed much more than I ever expected." Comments the prayer meetings are well attended. Expresses sorrow for "the neuralgia in his head." Advises him to avoid close confinement. Hopes he will continue to clerk in Memphis through the winter: "I don't feel quite as uneasy about you when you are clerking as when you are marching." Acknowledges the many temptations he must be facing, "but remember that out of them all the Lord is able to deliver you." Asks if he needs any money.

Reports that "[t]he Baptists have their meeting in full blast at present with good success." Says they have established a "mourner's bench" with rules for conversion similar to those of their church. Lists the names of people who were baptised including "an unstable Methodist." Mentions two friends who enlisted in the army for one year and received a government bounty of five hundred and fifty dollars each. Does not expect the war to last more than another year. Discusses the family finances in great detail.

Expresses deep sorrow that one year ago "Your Dear Father lay suffering 'nigh onto death." Complains that due to all the parties and suppers this season she is often left home alone, but adds that "Grier says he is going to do better and stay at home more." Asks him not to tell Grier what she has written. Reports they are having the coldest winter in twenty years. States the Baptist meetings are still going on and prospering. Writes to his cousin from camp near Louisville. Expects to go down the Tennessee River very soon but has been detained due to ice in the river. Informs him that six companies left yesterday. Comments his brother Joseph "has a great deal to say about our country becoming bankrupt, the suffering of widows and orphans and the unnecessary destruction of life, all for the abolition of slavery." Says he doesn't have much faith in the peace rumors, "the Rebel Army at Richmond will have to be subdued before the Rebel authorities are willing to come back into the Union."

Expresses relief he is still in Memphis. Reports his regiment is suffering, with little to no food. Says the Baptist meeting is over and they "immersed" seventeen people. Comments she witnessed the immersion and "...became disgusted and went home thinking I had seen enough for one day." Mentions that Grier is at a party, but she intends to limit his socializing in the future. States she is glad that religion comforts him in all his trials.

Comments the papers are filled with peace rumors, but he is not optimistic.

Tracy lays out his resume to General Henry Jackson as "the oldest inspecting Officer of the Militia" in Massachusetts as reason to appoint him "Inspector for the District of Massachusetts." He includes his "abilities and character" as well as the loss of property "in consequence of the late Revolution." Tracy would like Jackson to write Secretary of War Knox to recommend him to President Washington.

Title: [Certificate for Jacob Rambo]

Partially printed certificate shows Jacob Rambo voluntarily enlisted at Fort Washington in the first regiment of levies to serve for six months. Also shows that Rambo swore an oath of allegiance. These levies were raised from a law signed by President Washington on 3 March 1791 to raise troops on the frontier. The document is signed twice by Rambo using an "X" for his mark. Sworn before and signed by A.E. Outlaw. Fort Washington was near Cincinnati, Ohio.
