At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

After 2 days' march the army is now 35 miles from Pocotaligo, South Carolina. He describes the field where he writes, with two or three recently killed rebels, and that he has captured geese, turkey, and chickens to eat. Written on letterhead for the Head-Quarters Military Division of the Mississippi.
