Title: Confederate dead on Rose Farm, Gettysburg, Pa. [July 5, 1863]

Inscription on image: "After first [inserted: day of] battle at Gettysburg." Photographer's labels were often incorrect [sometimes intentionally], and this is such a case. The image is actually of Confederate dead on the Rose farm, which was the scene of fighting on July 2. The photo was actually taken by Gardner on July 5, according to Frassanito in "Getysburg: Journey In Time" [p. 209]. The corpses have been collected by Federal burial parties. Gardner's darkroom wagon is visible on the left side of the image. Formerly part of H.W. Fay's (keeper of Lincoln's tomb) scrapbook.

The newspaper article is dated April 3 but there are two other dates written on the item. Inscription in upper left corner: "Miss Bessie Hallett April 7, 1909." Inscripiton in upper right corner: "Bessie Hallett." Inscription on bottom: "April 5, 1908 Interocean April 5/08." Caption under photo of indignation meeting (same image as .618): "Remarkable photo taken at Bloomington, Illinois April, 25th 1865 showing indignation meeting over the death of Lincoln." However, the article describes an Abraham Lincoln speech given on May 29, 1856. See GLC 5111.01.0618

The hat box's history is printed on verso. Mrs. Lincoln gave it to a Mr. Gallagher who sold it to a Mr. Barker who sold it to the owner at the time, Sam Hinkle of Springfield, Illnois. The hat size is 8 1/2.
