Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Serrell is seated, his left arm rests on a table beside him with a map laid out on it. He holds his sword in his left hand. The corners of the image have been rounded. Inscription on verso: "Col. Edward Serrell." The image has been painted. From Brady Archives, mounted on cabinet card mounts just before or during early 1862.
