Mentions his brother Grier bought a coat for twenty dollars: "...I have to let him get some things for himself or he gets out of heart and thinks he has to work and gets nothing..." Worries about the amount of work that needs to be done on the farm during the summer and the scarcity of help.

Discusses putting new fencing around the whole property in the spring.

Reports she attended a "sing" at the Baptist Church. Informs a neighbor has typhoid fever. Complains of a sore throat and toothache. Asks, "Wasn't that disgusting about A. Johnson being drunk the day he was inaugurated?" (Possibly referring to President Andrew Johnson, who was in office 1865-1869 and was inaugurated 15 April 1865, after the date of this letter. Informs a man in his regiment died of typhoid after surviving the Battle at Nashville. Comments "I don't think it is an exhausting business for you to write two letters a week- and I don't think it would hurt you to write three."

This appears to be a partial, preliminary draft of Knox's 29 August 1790 letter to George Washington (in the GW Papers at the Library of Congress) responding to Washington's secret communication of 27 August. In that communication, sent to the members of his Cabinet, Washington asked for opinions as to the proper response to take if the British asked for permission to travel across U.S. territory, from Detroit to the Mississippi, in order to attack Spanish posts.
