Later copy. A set of notes made in 1848 from the original instructions from Knox to commissioners negotiating a treaty with the Northwestern Indians (see GLC02437.05823). The top of page one is marked "1848" in a different hand. The commissioners are to be knowledgeable on previous treaties with the Indians, especially the 1789 treaty signed at Fort Harmar. Provides a list of payments made to the 10 employees of the War Department for the second quarter of 1793. A total of $1,695.18 was paid out on 2 July. All the employees except Secretary Knox signed the document, saying they received their money. The document notes Knox has a salary of $3,000 per annum and his chief clerk makes $800 per annum. The assistant clerks make $500 per annum, while the messenger makes $250. Signed by John Stagg, Constant Freeman, Jr., Benjamin Bankson, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Henry Laugier, David Henley, Jacob Hoffman, and Frederick Sprig.

Says "the Inhabitants are extravigent [sic] in their demands, they take ever[y] advantage of us knowing that we must submit, for we cannot proceed on without their assistance - from this state of act please to inform me, must I proceed on at this great expence of more than 4 Dolls pr day when on business, and as much when detaind by Mr Vesey Ill health."
