Depicts a number of ships in the river, including a steamboat [which flies a U.S. flag] and sloops. Two small clusters of buildings are situated directly across the river from one another. The river bends away from the photographer on the left hand side of the image, just below the towns. One building in the foreground bears the sign: "Ship Chandlery." A group of men stand next to some buildings and the ruins of a chimney on the far right. Across the river from them is a row of tents.

A print of a photograph taken of a US Navy riverine patrol boat during the Civil War. It is a steam double-ended sidewheel gunboat of what is popularly referred to as the "Sassacus"-class. Built for patroling rivers, many were deployed to Virginia where photographer Matthew B. Brady would have had access to them. Below the image "Brady" and "Washington" are written in black ink.

A salt print of a photographic portrait of a man identified as Maj. Sidell. Heavily touched-up by Brady studio artists. Posibly an original painting and not a photograph. Research brings up a William Henry Sidell, born 1810 in New York, NY. Sidell graduated from West Point in 1833, and was comissioned Major and put in charge of the 15th Infantry Regiment upon the start of the Civil War in 1861. Promoted to Liutenant Colonel at some point, then full bird in 1863. As shoulder straps of Maj. and Lt. Col. are the same except for coloration, photograph can be placed between 1861 and 1863. A salt print of a photographic portrait of Edward D. Baker. With the following note: "Given to me by Father 2/10/1955 in his store room as we examined the negatives together. This is a Brady photograph which had been extensively touched up by a Brady artist, for re-photographing." Edward D. Baker was a senator from Oregon and an old friend of Lincoln's. He helped to raise a regiment and then led it to destruction at Ball's Bluff on 21 October 1861. He was killed in battle and made into a martyr for the nation. A print of a photograph of a two-story brick building. Union officers posed on horses in front of Falls Church, VA where George Washington once worshipped. It was a favorite tourist site for soldiers passing through. On the inside of the church's walls, soldiers often wrote down their names and units. It became a catalogue of sorts for Union regiments passing by. Title from graphite inscription below photograph: "Falles [sic] Church in va." "Falls Church" is written below that. Print is in an oval shape on a rectangular sheet of albumen.

A print of a portrait of Assistant Adjutant-General Colonel DeGarmo Jones, 3/4 length sitting, wearing epaulettes and holding sword. Jones, born ca. 1833-1835 Wayne, MI, was the son of DeGarmo Jones, Mayor of Detroit in 1839 as well as a businessman and industrialist. Grave and genology records record Jones the younger dying in the summer of 1864. Jones had served as Assistant Adjutant-General of Michigan (likely the militia or reserve army). A print of a photograph taken of a large group of soldiers standing in front of a small house. There are various small tents to the left and right. Two soldiers hold bundles of telegraph wire in the center of the image. The house, presumably the main building of the headquarters, stands shaded by trees in the background. The U.S. Engineers Battalion was attached to the Army of the Potomac and helped breach the fortifications at Petersburg. Title taken from graphite inscription on verso, also inscribed is "XI-II 65." Blair was a representative in Congress from Missouri from 1857-1862, where he resigned upon joining the Union Army during the Civil War. Appointed brigadier general of volunteers on August 7th, 1862 and major general on November 9th, 1862. Was later re-elected to Congress in 1863 and served until 1865. Was Horatio Seymour's running-mate during the 1868 presidential election though was unsuccessful. Portrait here by Matthew B. A bust showing shoulder and head, Sheridan is wearing the uniform of a Union Army General Officer and his rank is shown as Major General (two stars on shoulder straps). Philip Henry Sheridan was promoted from brigadier to major general following his performance in the battles of Perryville [October 8th, 1862] and Stones River [December 31st, 1862 to January 2nd, 1863]. Promoted to Liutenant General on March 4th, 1869.
