Countersigned by Washington's military secretary, Jonathan Trumbull, and Adjutant James Bradford. Matross' discharge came shortly after the end of the American Revolution. His service began 10 March 1781. With a nineteenth century note on the loan of this document to an International Exposition by Mrs. William Cummings Story Lawrence of Long Island, New York. Brown and the Harper's Ferry Insurrection" which was never completed or published.
