Patton is thanking Middleton for the bravery of his troops at Bastogne and their subsequent movements in the Rhine. Middleton writes back that he is humbled by the honor and has trashing to his officers Patton's words of appreciation.

Garaudy asks Nancy if she received his postcard from Alaska. He mentions he bought her a gift, and has another birthday gift in mind for her. Garaudy writes that this letter will be short because he wants to rest for duty tonight and provides Nancy with his mailing address.
