He is grateful to come from a strong home and family. He is sorry to hear that Richard has been ill. He is anxious to hear that so many people at home have been getting married and hopes the ugly ones marry off so the good ones stand a chance. The weather and the growing season have been fine.

He has been anxious to hear about health problems. His scholarship and reputation have expanded, and he has become a "very conspicuous character among the good people of Alabama." He expects to attend a local Baptist revival meeting. He also plans to start a geography school next season somewhere in the South. While he always tries to be friendly and sociable, the women here are larger and not as intelligent as other places.

He remarks on the changing seasons. School closes in two weeks and he plans to move on instead of remaining, but would rather participate on the march to Mexico as he is growing tired of the monotonous life of schoolmaster. His dream to study in Dublin or Paris, however, is simply a dream. Robert has suggested he marry a young woman who he has since decided is not as beautiful as he first thought.

He hopes to find another school with better wages. He hopes that Robert will burn this letter after reading it. The weather is finally cold enough to kill hogs. He encourages him to study Greek to get a better job.

It is difficult to write because he has not heard from the family in almost three months. He has agreed to remain at his school for one more session and was a little disappointed to be passed up for another school, where a doctor with dependent orphans was hired. He probably will not return home this summer.

He feels close to home when he writes letters home. He comments on good housekeeping skills, and a wedding by candlelight he recently attended, where he was matched up with a very beautiful young woman. Money is being raised for the suffering in Ireland.

As spring approaches, the farmers prepare for what they hope is a good planting season. Relief efforts for the famishing Irish are still happening. A new postal law requires payment for sending papers, and he won't be able to send as many to her

He is delighted to receive the letter and hopes to communicate more in the future. He reports conditions of famine, sickness, and waste and efforts to provide subsistence through public works, limited to certain numbers from each family. He updates news on the family, including marriages and deaths, including all his cousin's sisters.

He is eager to maintain correspondence with him as an old friend. He imagines war news being disseminated at home. Many people are leaving the city for the North and cooler climates, and he is working to close his business for the season and enjoy some rural relaxation.
