One soldier leans against tree in the middle of the photograph and two other soldiers and a dog pose near one the cannons on the left hand side of the photograph. The ruins of the once-great, eight acre Haxalll's Flour Mill stand at right. The hydropowered mill burned in the large fire that consumed thrity squares of the business section of Richmond. Crenshaw's Mill across the canal and the wooden shops on the right were preserved. The canal was used to relieve supplying pressures on the stressed Confederate rail roads. Severak civilians pose on the bridge.

The tent to the rear is a "Sibley" tent attached to log base [wintered or garissoned for long-term dwelling] and appears to be attached to an A-frame tent in the front. A brick chimney had been built behind the Sibley quarters and a tin smoke pipe pokes throught the A-frame tent. The group appears to be all officers, and the two men standing on the right wear oiled cloth kepi covers. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XI or (IX) 291."
