Negative by J. Gardner. From Gardner's "Photographic Sketchbook, Vol II. No.51" with text accompanying panel. Also includes text description page. The pontoon bridge in the photograph is located either at Weyanoke Point or Powhattan Point, near Harrison's Landing, VA. The bridge was constructed on the 14 June 1864. A few sailing vessels are visible on the river, while soldiers populate the bridge itself. See GLC 5111.01.0398

Title taken from inscription on recto. Huge signal tower built by General Benjamin F. Butler with a signalmen standing on various levels and several men posed in front of it. Modern graphite inscription on mount suggests the photo was taken by J. Reekie in 1862 ca., although a similar picture taken from different angle appears in the Photographic History of the Civil War, Vol. 2, p. 439, states the photograph was taken in June 1864.

Staged photograph of Zouaves demonstrating the removal of wounded men and placing them in an ambulance. Zouaves could be members of the 114th Pennsylvania Regiment. Location possibly in Virginia. Note on back: "Manner of removing wounded from the field. 285. XXV." Said to be ex-Meserve.

A group of six children stand in the middle of the street in the foreground. Camp Nelson was a recruiting and training station for Federal soldiers during the war. Written at Fort Nelson.

Taken by Gutekunst. Accompanying panel of text reads: "Scenes from the Battlefield at Gettysburg, PA. Gateway of the Cemetery. Being our Centre, looking West, on the 2d and 3d of July, 1863." A wagon, perhaps an ambulance, stands just inside the cemetery gate. Note also the shattered window panes and dismantled fence. The Tyson brothers took a very similar view that August. Actually a photograph of Meade's Headquarters at the widow Pfeffer House used after the battle. A civilian man stands near the fence gate.

Taken by Gutekunst. Accompanying text panel reads: "Scenes from the battlefield at Gettysburg, PA. The Seminary. Being the left of our Line of Battle on the 1st of July. In front of the Grove to the right is the spot where General Reynolds fell." Reynolds was actually killed roughly a half mile from the Seminary [in the same direction that the camera faces]. In "Early Photography at Gettysburg," Frassinito suggests Gutekunst took the photograph from this unique perspective in an attempt to incorporate both subjects [the Seminary and Reynolds' death] into his composition. Taken by Gutekunst. A civilian man wearing an unusually patterned, light colored frock coat is standing fourth from the left of the lone woman. This same man can be seen in GLC 511.01.0228 standing left of the tree immediately in front of the large tent in the right foreground. Several soldiers are joined by a group of medical sewards, civilian nurses and members from one of the civilian relief organizations [i.e., the Christian Commission] are standing next to the tents. The hospital was located on the [Jacob] Schwartz farm between July 5-23 1863. See GLC 5111.01.0228

An inscription on the verso elaborates further: "Gen'l. view of the battlefield of the first of July the road in the foreground is the Chambersburg Pike the ridge in the background was our line of battle." The view shows Seminary ridge on the horizon. The Oak Ridge Railroad Cut can be seen on the right of the image. By T.R. Holland [Philadelphia?]. Based on an earlier [younger] photograph: "From a Portrait in possession of Mrs. Anderson." Major Robert Anderson was in command of Fort Sumter when it was fired upon on April 12, 1861, setting off the Civil War. He would surrender the next day, Anderson was forced to surreder but became a hero to the North.
