Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wearing his cape to obscure his rank, Meigs holds his hat in his right hand and the pommel of his sword in his left. Ink inscription on verso "Montgomery C. Meigs. Brig Genl V.Q.M.C. USA May 15, 1861" "Jan 1864" "Bvt Maj gen USA July 5, 1864. Retired Feb 6 1882 (over 62 years of age)."
