Title: An Indian in Spite of Myself

A six-page essay, in which the author, J.J. Osuna, describes his move from Puerto Rico to the U.S. to attend the Carlisle Indian School in 1901. He writes about how sad he was to leave his mother, about the journey over, and about the school itself. He dislikes the school and, as a Puerto Rican of Spanish descent, he feels out of place among Native Americans, so after one year he leaves to attend the Bloomsburg Normal School. In 1905, however, the Carlisle Indian School allows him to graduate with his class.

He asks if she has received the handkerchief he sent to her. Augsberger requests that she tell him when she has gotten it so he can know how long it took to cross the Atlantic. He writes that he misses her very much, especially on cold nights and recalls how they used to cuddle up in his car to get warm.

Augsberger expresses to Ardena how much she means to him, and says that "you are about the only thing I have to live for." He tells her about a guy here that he gets along pretty well with. He talk about their wives, and the guy's son. Augsberger says the son is "a cute little thing," and wishes that he and Ardena had a child. He writes that he knows she has said that she doesn't want any babies, so he won't talk about it anymore. Augsberger asks Ardena if she still wants to marry him when he returns, since he thinks she doesn't love him anymore. He asks Ardena to wait for him.
