Private Tate served for a time with Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah; he appears to have come from Pickensville, Alabama. Tate's letters, written to his mother and sister Mary Jane at Jenna Point (Tuscaloosa County, Alabama), concern First Bull Run, Peninsula Campaign, Seven Pines, Antietam, Stonewall Jackson, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg (letter #34 dated near Carlisle), and Petersburg. Engraved by Jeffrey and Fagan. Oversize engraving showing lower Manhattan Island, part of Brooklyn and Hoboken, N.J. A cartouche extending across the bottom has a panoramic "South West View of the City of New York." Based upon the survey of 1766-1767. The map shows city blocks, streams and shallows. Dedicated to Sir Henry Moore, Governor in Chief of New York. The survey was commissioned because of the Stamp Act riots but not published until just before the British invasion. Discusses removal of Native Americans, questions the constitutionality of the Bank, and decries corruption in governmental office. Suggests an amendment to keep close Presidential elections from being decided by Congress. Also covers foreign affairs, the tariff, finances, military and other domestic matters.

Requests Wheeler's assistance in acquiring wagons. Remarks, "I need these wagons greatly. My Division has not, including these wagons, near the amount of transportation allowed, and you will readily see to what inconvenience I am put to get along without them." Transmits a letter (not included) from a correspondent in Kentucky. Contains water stains.

The collection mostly consists of correspondence from Painter to his aunt and sisters. His letters contain descriptions of camp life, his feelings towards slavery, and anti-Yankee sentiment in Virginia shortly after the war. More specifically he witnesses fighting between the Monitor and Merrimac, the Battle at Batchelder's Creek, the Battle of Fort Harrison/Chaffin's Farm, the fall of Richmond, and the Union occupation of Petersburg. Describes his visions of lava flows, overflowing oceans and ghosts (sounds almost Blakean). Mentions places all over the globe and gives strange account of manufacturing snowshoes from a pattern from Greece. Stephen as Major General in the Revolution led a division which accidentally fought troops of Anthony Wayne at Germantown, was accused of intoxication, and was subsequently dismissed in 1777. Seller's description says he apparently became insane after this.
