Written by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide, and signed by Shaw on Knox's behalf. Covers many aspects of the defense of West Point and the need to avoid a surprise attack. Knox gives instructions pertaining to arms and ammunition, sentries, guardhouses, closing of the gates, provisions, alarms, and signals. Signed by eight officers commanding redoubts and forts in the vicinity of West Point. These men acknowledge receipt of Knox's instructions.

Maitland's mother writes to her son. Expresses hope he will be home in the spring. Reports she attended a funeral for an eighty-year-old neighbor. Comments there has been a revival of religion in the county. Includes a detailed accounting of their financial situation. Mentions his brother Grier bought a coat for twenty dollars: "...I have to let him get some things for himself or he gets out of heart and thinks he has to work and gets nothing..." Worries about the amount of work that needs to be done on the farm during the summer and the scarcity of help.

Remarks "I don't know whether our rich folks have raised enough money to clear the township from draft or not, they lacked one thousand dollars the last meeting they held." Discusses putting new fencing around the whole property in the spring.

Reports she attended a "sing" at the Baptist Church. Informs a neighbor has typhoid fever. Complains of a sore throat and toothache. Asks, "Wasn't that disgusting about A. Johnson being drunk the day he was inaugurated?" (Possibly referring to President Andrew Johnson, who was in office 1865-1869 and was inaugurated 15 April 1865, after the date of this letter. May therefore be referring to his inauguration…

Joseph writes to "Dear Darling Bell." Comments how fast her letter reached him, "...not three days on the road...." Proclaims his love for her and imagines her lips. Says he received three other letters from friends and relatives and relays their news to her. Reports the Mississippi River is very high and still rising, enabling the boats to travel quickly. Informs a man in his regiment died of typhoid after surviving the Battle at Nashville. Comments "I don't think it is an exhausting business for you to write two letters a week- and I don't think it would hurt you to write three."

Mentions there will be a "Ball" next week and asks her if "... there is any harm in dancing?"

Document is unsigned, but docket declares that the statement was given to John Lowell. Statement declares that Zachariah and Bethiah Fowle mortgaged land in Charlestown, Massachusetts to Thomas Flucker in 1750. Samuel Henley purchased the land in 1756 and paid off Mr. Flucker's mortgage. Provides some information about the account. Declares that "Mr. Henley when alive stated these facts to Genl Knox in 1789, who was so well satisfied of the truth of the statement, that he promised to execute the necessary papers when he should come on to Boston." Docket is in Knox's hand.
