A print of a photograph taken of a large group of soldiers standing in front of a small house. There are various small tents to the left and right. Two soldiers hold bundles of telegraph wire in the center of the image. The house, presumably the main building of the headquarters, stands shaded by trees in the background. The U.S. Engineers Battalion was attached to the Army of the Potomac and helped breach the fortifications at Petersburg. Title taken from graphite inscription on verso, also inscribed is "XI-II 65." A copy of a photograph of Francis Preston Blair, Jr. in Union military attire circa 1862. Blair was a representative in Congress from Missouri from 1857-1862, where he resigned upon joining the Union Army during the Civil War. Appointed brigadier general of volunteers on August 7th, 1862 and major general on November 9th, 1862. Was later re-elected to Congress in 1863 and served until 1865. A bust showing shoulder and head, Sheridan is wearing the uniform of a Union Army General Officer and his rank is shown as Major General (two stars on shoulder straps). Philip Henry Sheridan was promoted from brigadier to major general following his performance in the battles of Perryville [October 8th, 1862] and Stones River [December 31st, 1862 to January 2nd, 1863]. Promoted to Liutenant General on March 4th, 1869.
