Bope writes to his sister from a camp near Stafford. Discusses picket duty. Mentions the surrender of Jackson, Mississippi, and comments the war will soon be over. Refers to a coward in his regiment who was willingly taken prisoner by the Confederates. Complains that the weather is too warm. Asks her to write him more often. Envelope has a color emblem with the phrase, "The Union Forever."

Discusses the upcoming election and his hope that John Brough will be the next Governor of Ohio.

Writes to his father from camp near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Thanks his mother and father for writing and for sending papers. Gives an update on his brother Theodore's health, which is improving, although his is still weak and in the hospital tent. Describes sleeping conditions. Writes that he visited the chaplain of the 118th Pennsylvania Regiment and was baptized and partook in the Sacrament. Letter incomplete and unsigned, pages missing. Written in graphite.

Thanks his family for the food they sent him and requests that they send him some emery paper (for filing his gun), tea, and pepper. Reports that Rosecrans has taken five or six hundred rebel prisoners to Nashville. Writes that rebels planted two underground shells on the railroad tracks which caused severe damage to the tracks but resulted in no casualties to either army. Discusses spending the fourth of July in Dixie land. He also reports that furloughs will only be granted with a recommendation from a doctor.
