Jefferson agrees to subscribe to a copy of Trumbull's engraving of the signing of Declaration (Staufer 679) and also orders a print of Washington's resignation. He invites Trumbull to see the new University of Virginia and review his drawings for the Rotunda. Jefferson suggests an engraving of the University (never made) and extends his warm wishes to Trumbull. One engraving, "The Declaration of Independence", included. Written in Monticello

Said party that was sent after the field piece he mentioned in his previous letter to Lincoln returned in the evening. Says General Elbert came upon a wagon that was overset and that they found a "cohorn" (a small mortar) and several chests, but left them behind because it was not convenient to bring them…

Hopes Secretary of the Navy Smith will recommend Morris to President James Madison. Documents the receipt from Major General Henry Dearborn of $10,000 for the defense of the Niagara frontier. Lewis was a former governor of New York who served as the quartermaster general of the United States army and also as a major general on the Niagara frontier during the War of 1812.

Title: [Sentence of court martial on Captain Eliphalet Thorp]

Thorp was tried for "abusing and plundering Margaret Weyman" and found not guilty of abuse but guilty of theft. The theft was made because Thorp had property stolen from him by Margaret's husband, who was "a vile Tory." Thorp was admonished. General Wooster approved the sentence in a short, signed note at the bottom.

Indicates that Dale was near "the theatre of the European War," referring to the first Barbary War, for which Truxtun declined a command. In a post script, indicates that he hopes Dale will stay in the Mediterranean for a year, "which will work down some of your fat of which you have too much."
